One pot synthesis of a cyclodextrin polyrotaxane and formation of a slide-ring gel

Polyrotaxanes are molecular entities in which many rings are threaded onto a polymer chain with attached stopper groups hindering the rings from dissociation. Polyrotaxanes were synthesized from isoprene, styrene and cyclodextrins through a one pot reaction in water similar to an emulsion polymerization. The product can be isolated simply by heat filtration. Slide-ring gels are obtained by cross-linking of the threaded cyclodextrins using diisocyanates.

Wenz Group | Saarland University, Germany

Gerhard Wenz has been working as Professor of Organic Macromolecular Chemistry at Saarland University in Saarbrücken, Germany, since 2000. His scientific work is devoted to the creation of smart materials from renewable feedstocks such as starch and cellulose. His group is interested in both the synthesis of new materials and the investigation of the properties.

Gergely Kali received his PhD in the field of Polymer Chemistry with Prof. Béla Iván at Eövös Loránd University, Budapest, Hungary in 2009. From 2005 to 2006 he was Marie Curie fellow at the University of Cyprus in the group of Prof. Dr. Costas S. Patrickios and from 2010 – 2011 SciEx fellow at the Department of Chemistry, University of Basel in the group of Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Meier and Dr. Nico Bruns. Since 2013 he is working at Saarland University on radical polymerization in supramolecular systems.

Jessica Hilschmann received her Master of Chemistry at Saarland University in the year 2014. Afterwards she started her PhD thesis about the synthesis of hydrophilic polyrotaxanes from cyclodextrins and characterization by NMR techniques.

Harley Eisenbarth received his Master of Chemistry at Saarland University in the year 2015. Afterwards he started his PhD thesis about the synthesis of hydrophobic polyrotaxanes from cyclodextrins and the investigation of their thermal and mechanical properties.
